Microsoft Teams users will soon be able to temporarily change their display name during their Teams meetings. This option, which remains optional, will be under the control of the meeting organizers.
What impact will this have on your organization?
The feature will be disabled by default for all tenants, so there will be no impact. Administrators will be able to activate this feature for their organization in the Teams admin center, either for all tenant members, or for selected members. These members will then be able to activate the feature in their scheduled private meetings.
How does it work?
If this new option is enabled for the tenant, a meeting organizer will be able to activate the feature for his meeting in the meeting options > Allow participants to change their display name. By default, this feature will be disabled in the meeting options and must be enabled by the meeting organizer.
If enabled for a meeting, participants can join the meeting, then select Participants at the top of the screen to change their own display name in the participants panel.
For example, Daniela Mandera can change her name in a meeting to Daniela M.
Participants who have modified their name will have a label (modified) next to their name in the meeting screens.
The original names of people’s cards will be displayed in certain meeting functionalities such as calendar invitations, meeting guest lists, group discussion lists, etc.
Permanent elements of the meeting (such as the attendance report and transcripts) will not reflect name changes.
Availability
Deployment of this new feature will begin in February 2025 and continue until April 2025, depending on the release schedule.
