Microsoft is preparing a major update for the Teams Desktop client on Windows to optimize performance and reduce the start-up time of call functionalities. The aim: to deliver a smoother, more responsive experience during meetings and calls.
What’s new?
A new dedicated process, ms-teams_modulehost.exe, will be introduced. It will handle calls and meetings separately from the main ms-teams.exe process. This separation allows :
- Better use of system resources.
- Significantly improved call and meeting performance.
- Increased stability with no impact on user interface or workflows.
Deployment?
The final date will be communicated by Microsoft by mid to late January 2026. This timeframe takes into account the adjustments required to meet organizations’ operational needs.
Impact on your organization
- Who’s concerned? All users of the Teams Desktop client on Windows.
- Concrete changes:
- A new process will appear in the Task Manager.
- No visible change for end users.
- Administrators need to ensure that security and terminal management tools allow this new process.
Recommended actions
- Update authorization lists to include ms-teams_modulehost.exe.
- Inform support teams to avoid confusion during troubleshooting.
- Adapt internal documentation if it mentions the names of Teams processes.
- Configure QoS: apply the same settings as for ms-teams.exe, without deleting existing parameters.
