As of October 8, 2025, threads in Microsoft Teams channels are generally available on desktop and mobile. This new feature transforms the way teams collaborate online, combining the fluidity of chat-style discussions with the organized structure of channels.
Why is it useful?
- Less noise: each subject stays in its own thread, avoiding cross-talk.
- Better readability: members can quickly scan discussions and concentrate on what’s relevant to them.
- Flexibility: you can change the layout of an existing channel in thread mode without losing messages.
Copilot to the rescue
For users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, an automatic thread summary function is available. Copilot identifies key points and highlights them, allowing you to catch up on a conversation without reading everything. This is ideal for kick-off meetings, marketing campaigns or bug management, where several discussions need to coexist without getting lost.
How do I activate Threads?
You can follow or unfollow a thread, customize your notifications by channel, and even activate compact mode to display more threads on screen. Simply right-click on the Teams channel concerned, then select
Availability
Threads are accessible on both the desktop and mobile versions of Microsoft Teams, making it easy to stay connected and organized, no matter where you’re working. You can follow or unfollow a thread, customize your notifications by channel, and even activate compact mode to display more threads on the screen.
Microsoft plans to go one step further with the introduction of Channel Agents, currently in Public Preview for Copilot users. These agents act as virtual teammates, able to track projects, answer questions and keep everyone up to date.
