As part of its strategy to enhance the hybrid work experience, Microsoft Teams introduces a new feature: automatic location detection. From December 2025, this feature will allow users to seamlessly update their work location when they connect to the Wi-Fi network or an office device in their organization.
Intelligent localization for better collaboration
With this new feature, Teams can automatically determine which building a user is in when they connect to Wi-Fi or a device such as a monitor. This lets colleagues know who is on site, and facilitates spontaneous meetings, face-to-face meetings and team coordination.
Two signals to detect location
Administrators can configure automatic detection via :
- Wi-Fi network: by associating SSIDs and BSSIDs with buildings in Microsoft Places.
- Desktop peripherals: by mapping monitors or other equipment to specific desktops.
Privacy and user consent
- By default, users are disabled for this feature.
- Each user must give his or her consent in the Teams application (Windows or macOS).
- Directors may not give consent on their behalf.
- Localization is active only during the working hours defined in Outlook, and is reset outside these times.
Benefits for your organization
- Improved visibility of employees’ physical presence.
- Reduce the friction of scheduling face-to-face meetings.
- Smoother user experience, with no manual entry of the workplace.
📅 Availability
- Worldwide deployment planned from December 2025.
