Critical update for SBAs with Microsoft Teams

Organizations using Microsoft Teams with Direct Routing and a Survivable Branch Appliance (SBA) must update their environment before September 1, 2025. This update is essential to guarantee service continuity and compatibility with future Microsoft 365 evolutions.

🛠️ What is an SBA?

A Survivable Branch Appliance is an on-site solution that maintains Teams telephony in the event of an Internet connectivity failure. In the event of an outage, users can continue to make and receive calls via the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), thanks to a local connection to the Session Border Controller (SBC).

Example of architecture

🚨 Why is this update critical?

Microsoft has announced that SBA versions prior to February 2025 (i.e. before version 2025.2.5.1) will cease to function correctly after September 1, 2025.

Indeed:

  • 🟣Older versions of SBA will no longer be able to interact with the new telemetry and configuration endpoints.
  • 🟣Associated Microsoft services will no longer be compatible with obsolete versions.
  • 🟣Technical support will no longer be provided for non-updated versions.

✅ What you need to do

To avoid service interruptions, we recommend the following actions:

  • 🔄 Update your SBA to version 2025.2.5.1 or later.
  • 📥 Download the latest firmware from your SBA supplier (e.g. AudioCodes, Ribbon…).
  • 🔐 Check that TLS certificates and ports are correctly configured.
  • 🧪 Test automatic switchover in the event of an Internet outage to validate correct operation.

🗓️ Deadline: September 1, 2025

After this date, non-updated SBAs will lose their ability to function properly, jeopardizing the continuity of your telephone communications.

🎯 Conclusion

This upgrade isn’t just an enhancement – it’s a critical requirement for any organization that relies on Teams telephony with Direct Routing and an SBA. Don’t delay – plan your upgrade now!
